Waste Water Treatment

As Mayor I plan to be proactive in getting to the roots of the issue and addressing challenges early. For example, there was a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on Maui that may impact our Kealakehe Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kona. The ruling, Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund vs. County of Maui, found that the Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Facility violated the Clean Water Act. The situation with Maui’s treatment plant is in some ways similar to what is happening on our island in West Hawai‘i, so it’s quite possible that our county may be sued as well unless we act quickly to improve the system. As Mayor, I intend to be proactive on addressing this issue and other issues like this before they incur more liability and environmental damage.
