Hilo Landfill
Many of the challenges our county government faces have been issues for years, and rather than fixing them the county has kicked the can down the road. As Mayor I plan on addressing these long-standing issues, such as the Hilo landfill problem, which we’ve known about for 20 years. Currently, we are hauling rubbish from one side of the island to the other. This is expensive, environmentally unsound, dangerous, and taking its toll on our infrastructure. I pledge to address this issue in my first 100 days of office. Fixing our landfill is complicated and can’t be solved overnight. However, what we can do immediately is convene a working group with a hard deadline for recommendations, vigorously promote recycling to reduce waste, and decrease the current number of trips to the West Hawai‘i landfill.
